Throughout its history, the philosophical thought often stumbled upon and whirled around the body, but it rarely made the body the core of its enquiry. The body came into the foreground as a philosophical object in contemporary philosophy (e.g. in the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty and Foucault; or in somaesthetic), but that does not mean it was never conceptualised before that. This year we will wade through the depths of the philosophical thought on the body.
This year’s Philosophical marathon is once again a five day event, organised in cooperation of students and professors of the Department of Philosophy of Faculty of Arts. We will try to grasp the body from different directions, questioning the classical philosophical problem of mind-body dualism, built on the ancient tradition and traversing the philosophical thought to this day. Could the answer to the dilemma of mind- body dualism tracing back thousands of years be found in Spinozism, trying to disprove of said dualism? Could it be found in Marxist materialism, feminism? Maybe even in modern technology? We will observe the body in its different forms – depicted in art, in movement, its age and its final end. All that and more will be heard and debated at this year’s Philosophical marathon.
If your thoughts run wilder and your debates more vigorous with a glass of wine or beer in your hands in an informal environment, you are invited to join us in two venues beyond the faculty walls. On Thursday, the 21st of November at 7PM in MSUM (Museum of Contemporary Art), you are invited to two evening lectures, followed by a feast; and on Friday, the 22nd of November at 3:30PM in club Tiffany you can join as for the afternoon round of lectures, a couple of drinks and a party in the evening. See you at the Marathon!
